Toyota Etios is a car that has never been made by the
company in terms of the cost. The Toyota Etios will compete with the Tata
Indigo CS, Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda City and the Indigo CS.
The looks are on the predictable side with a steady and
decent design with a lengthy wheel base. There is nothing new on the design
aspect though. The front grille is a trademark Toyota style with slants that
increases on the flat body.
The side looks a bit out of the box with a bending line at
the bottom of the doors which is a master piece. The 15 inch tyres give the
much needed to maturity to the machine. The back end of the car does not have
much to be talked about. The door looks a straight replica of the Logan.
So what if the outside is not what you expected. The
insides a complete shocker. Wait, its not in the wrong sense. The Etios is
the coziest machine in its segment. The back occupants seats are comforting
with large support, perfect ergonomics and high quality upholstery. The Etios
is a 5 seater easily filling up 3 people at the rear with its flat seats.
The front seats are up to the back seats in terms of every
aspect with right amount of cushion. The insides are roomy with a huge 595
litre luggage space, seven full-sized cup holders and a 13-litre chilled glove
box which is the biggest we have seen. The seats, however, dont flip or fold.
The drivers seat is the place to be. The steering is adjustable with eagles
eye visibility and there is no obstruction with instrumental panel as well
which is out of the drivers way unlike the Indica Vista. The high end VX
version has blood red colored furnishings. The Interiors are clean and neat but
fail to live up to the luxury class likes of the Vento or the City. The car
seems to have been customized for the Indian roads with good ground clearance.
The Toyota Etios seems to have been made to shed some extra pounds as it
weights only a mere 930 kg which is much lighter than Dzire or the Swift.
The engine is a 1.5-litre motor with twin cams and four
valves per cylinder powering up to 90bhp. The gearing is short but makes with
good ride control and easy to drive. The transmission system is a no fuss and
delivers the best mileage of 17.64 kmpl as per the ARAI. The 1.5 litre engine
does begin to scream as you power up but still good enough to make a few fast
corners. The steering too is a charm and the light weight adds to the agility
though there is a fault steering around the straight ahead direction.
Etios is not for the free way driver but for a utility man
who wants comfort and a decent quality car. The Etios is not a charmer with its
looks but suits the Indian conditions with good mileage, space, comfort and
easy driving. The pricing too is reasonable around the region of 5 to 7 lakhs.
