Should Your First Car Be a Used BMW?

You have saved and saved your money, and you are now embarking upon a
rite of passage—buying your first car. There are so many things you
should consider with safety being first among others such as price,
re-sale value, repair needs, and availability of parts for those
repairs, but the only thing on your mind is the car. That is why a used
BMW is a great choice for the first time buyer.

These luxury cars are purchased new generally by the elite few that can
afford them. Their resale value is at best about five years after
driving off a new lot, and that is to your advantage. Those who drive
new cars replace them every four to five years on average, and a five
year old used BMW is a great first car. It could still be under a
dealer’s warranty, though an extended warranty would be easy to obtain
due to the car’s reliability. A luxury car such as this was surely cared
for meticulously by its first owner which means a comparably new
vehicle is being passed down to you.

BMWs continue to have excellent resale value even after multiple owners.
You can snag a great deal on a newish vehicle that will have little
depreciation in comparison to its counterparts. Essentially, your first
vehicle is the foundation for all vehicles you will ever own. You will
trade it in on your next car, and if it does not hold its value, you
could continue to pay for it as a part of your next car loan. This used
car will draw top dollar for trade in or to sell for a down payment when
the time comes for you to move into your newer better car—perhaps
another luxury BMW.

You may hear a lot of hype about needing a mechanic specializing in
luxury foreign cars or even on this type of vehicle specifically. For
some reason, people want to tout this as a con to purchasing this type
of vehicle, but there is not real downside to using special mechanic.

For one, you will not spend a lot of time searching for someone if your
vehicle needs maintenance or repair; you know where you are going, and
it is likely that such a specialized business will know its customers
well. Your used BMW has such a good record of infrequent repairs outside
of regular maintenance, that even if prices on parts are higher (which
is not always true), it really carries no weight on your investment in
the vehicle. But let’s get back to you and your concerns. You will
certainly look good behind the wheel.

Jeep Wrangler - The Ultimate SUV for the Discerning Consumer

SUVs are more than brand luxury and sophistication. Four-wheel drives
are typically the sought after model for a family car simply because
they are as efficient as they are robust. Jeeps in particular are one of
the most multifunctional four wheel drives out there, and from the
enormously popular Jeep Wrangler to the vintage class that is the
Cherokee there is plenty of choice for the most discerning buyer.

What is Certification All About?

Pre-owned cars are not just about stretching the dollar and certified
pre-owned (CPO) vehicles are increasingly recognized as the most
dependable approach to buying used cars. A number of pre-owned SUV
resellers recommend certified models for purchase since these are
covered by additional manufacturer warranties to ensure minimal
maintenance outflows in the long term. While some dealerships offer
in-house certification and inspection, most checks are routinely
performed by manufacturer-trained mechanics.

With a large proportion of buyers showing a preference for certified
models, nearly all car manufacturers have an efficient CPO program to
help keep resale standards high. The process of certification of
pre-owned models typically involves a point-by-point inspection of
specific components in keeping with stringent manufacturing definitions.
Definitions are measured against the standards set in terms of engine
performance and wear, as well as mileage stats and fuel efficiency. The
actual inspection points may vary depending on the model chosen, but in
general the vehicles are examined against a spec sheet that is outlined
by the original manufacturer.

Why Certified Vehicles are Preferable

From top-selling four-wheel automatics to the rugged but reliable Jeep
Wrangler, the reliability of an SUV is patent. Be it luxury cars or
roomy family models, buyers are increasingly judicious and astute in
making purchasing decisions. With the popularity of pre-owned models on
the rise, certified vehicles are consistently preferred over models that
do not go though preliminary checks.

While rigorous testing may not be mandatory particularly if the SUV is a
recent buy, the peace of mind that comes with picking a certified four
wheel is undeniable. In addition to actually ensuring that the vehicles
meet predetermined standards, cars that are not CPO compliant are
serviced so as to ensure that their quality markup is suitable for
reselling. Certified SUVs also come with purchase incentives including
routine maintenance workups, flexible financing and in most cases the
option to choose from a range of extended warranty plans.

Pricing Your Purchase

In general, cost is not a good factor to base a decision upon, and
pricing is best discussed once the model features and CPO scores have
been adequately scrutinized. When negotiating a pre-owned Jeep Wrangler,
it helps to recognize that the initial value depreciation is much more
during the first year of purchase. With most resellers the price points
may be somewhat negotiable, but when it comes to certified SUVs any
additional expenses toward certification is completely justified.

Whether you fancy the off-road potential of a Jeep Wrangler or the
compact design of the Jeep Liberty, the vehicle design is as important
as its performance stats and running costs. Lay the groundwork right and
the efforts will pay off in no time.

Oil Change - Keeping a Classic Alive

The current fleet of new cars and trucks available for purchase today
are marketed as fuel efficient, available in flex fuel or electric
models, and possess the ability to travel longer distances per gallon
because they are manufactured with a “full-flow filtration” feature that
has made the vehicle lighter and capable of increasing the miles per
gallon ratio. But this feature does come at a cost, and that is the fact
that an oil change is required every 3,000 miles or every 3-6 months
(whichever comes first). The filter used in “full-flow filtration” is
smaller and works a little differently than filters in older model
vehicles: the oil pump sends all the oil through the filter before it
travels to the crankshaft bearing, cam bearings and valve train,
removing all contaminants and foreign matter prior to the oil entering
the engine.

In older model vehicles an oil change could be put off as long as
6-7,500 miles without the concern serious damage would occur to the
engine. But the vehicles of the past were not expected to get 25 or more
miles per gallon and emissions were not of as great a concern as they
are today. Every driver has seen the “non- classic” vehicle barreling
down the road spewing dark exhaust and releasing an occasional backfire,
and there were no feelings of envy toward the driver of that car.
Neglect toward a vehicle – an oil change put off, fluids allowed to run
low or past their replacement time - is a sure way to whip an engine and
cause the system to seize up. If this happens the only recourse is to
pay for costly repairs, replace the engine or replace the car.
Maintenance of a vehicle is necessary and if done on schedule as
suggested by the manufacturer, the vehicle could easily become a
'classic' envied by the next generation of drivers.

An oil change on a standard gas fueled vehicle will cost about $20-$40
depending on the make, model and year of the car or truck. A high end
foreign make, a diesel or turbo charged, flex fuel or electric car may
cost a little more due to their engine type. Most repair shops perform
oil changes, replacing the oil filter, the oil and lubricating the
chassis components. Many offer discounts online or in the newspaper, and
include several additional services in the cost: a check of the
transmission fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid,
antifreeze / coolant, tire pressure, air filter, Serpentine Belt, wiper
blades and vehicle lights.

An oil change every 3,000 miles is an inexpensive way to insure the
proper maintenance of the vehicle. By following proper maintenance
guidelines, the driver will benefit from better gas mileage and fewer
repair bills during the time they own the vehicle.

Oil Change Myths – Fact or Fiction

As most people can attest, an oil change is vital to the continued
functionality and performance of a vehicle. Over time, a variety of
myths have come to light involving the process which require attention
and correction. In this article, we will outline a few common old wives
tales regarding this time honored maintenance task.

1 – Oil must be changed every 3000 miles
Fact – Lighter oils have been seen to contribute to engine health, resulting in an extension between an oil change.

Back in the day… before oils consisted of detergents, emollients, and
other types of additives, 3000 mile maintenance marks were necessary.
With oils becoming lighter, they are able to retain viscosity. As such,
engines will remain cleaner for longer. These days, it’s rarely an issue
for newer vehicles to go 5,000 or even 6,000 miles between routine
maintenance. However, vehicles that use oil to lubricate additional
components, such as the dear timing chain should continue to stick by
the 3,000 mile rule.

2 – Darker Colors In Oil Equate To It Being Unsafe and Dirty
Fact – It is normal for the fluid to darken. In fact, darkening generally occurs as soon as a week after maintenance.

Fluid darkness does not mean that an oil change is required. Drivers can
check out a detailed analysis of the fluid in order to find out about
the composition and contamination percentage, though the process is
often quite costly and rarely necessary. Take a look at the
recommendations outlined in your vehicle’s owner’s manual and follow the
instructions provided there. This will help you keep your vehicle
functioning properly for years to come.

3 – Maintenance should be performed on the same schedule that you drive
Fact – Maintenance schedules will generally depend on your gasoline’s composition.
In the U.S. oil refiners manufacture a gasoline grad with a much higher
sulfur content than Japanese and Europeans. As such, drivers may be
required to have their maintenance performed more often when driving in
the United States than in parts of Europe and Asia.

4 – Seasons Change and So Does The Oil
Fact – 10W40 is best for warmer climates, whereas 5W30 is safe for year-round use.

In the vast majority of cases, drivers will be safe using 5W50 year ‘round, even in places where the temperature is much colder.

5 – Synthetics are best at preventing sludge buildup
Fact – There is not an oil in existence that can prevent sludge

The formation of sludge is the natural result of the combustion process
inside the engine. While fresh fluids are much better at picking up left
over particles, as they age, they will become less effective. When this
happens, the fluids will drop particles, resulting in sludge. Though
synthetic brands have been shown to hold onto these particles for longer
periods of time, there is not an oil in existence that can prevent
sludge completely.
