We are moving in a new sustainable direction as a country and as a
member of the global community. People are recognizing that global
climate change is a real issue and are adopting greener ways of getting
things done. Not only are individuals becoming more responsible, but
also major companies and corporations are following suit. Becoming
sustainable may not always be the cheapest way to get things done, but
with fewer natural resources at their disposal, it is becoming clear
that change needs to happen.
Today, hybrid and fully electric cars, although only a margin of the
market, are becoming increasingly popular to consumers. More and more
car companies are investing in this new technology and building cars
that are suited to the new way of thinking and at affordable prices. As
technology progresses, many people may be curious to know how this will
effect the industry of maintaining vehicles that run on gasoline. Will
we need oil change services and gas stations? What is the future for the
industry?
One thing to keep in mind is that although technology is progressing
rapidly and more and more cars are coming on to the road, change doesnt
happen as quickly as it seems. Today, mechanics that have been working
on cars for decades are staying abreast of all changes in the industry,
as they always have. There are dealership mechanics who receive special
factory training to deal with changes immediately and with a greater
depth than your friendly neighborhood mechanic delivering an oil change
or other maintenance services. Every professional in the field who
values their career choice is keeping up with technology and continuing
their education to adapt to the new technologies that come their way.
As far as gas stations, most of what is popular on the market now is
hybrid cars. Hybrid technology still uses gas, just much less of it. You
still need functioning gas stations to deliver this product just as you
will still need mechanics for an oil change. Before the electric car
becomes a reality for a larger portion of the consumer market, we will
still need gas stations. In the far, distant future, perhaps stations
will change to power stations. They may even be self-sustaining power
stations that get their power from wind turbines or solar panels. For
now, however, technology still relies on fossil fuels, even if it is
less dependent than before.
Things are changing, but change market-wide is a difficult thing to
accomplish in a short period of time. It will take 20 or more years to
see the complete reversal of our current way of life. If you are a
concerned gas station business owner or mechanic, dont worry. As things
change slowly, you will be able to adapt and future generations will be
able to handle the changes too.
