Auto Repair - Find a Good Mechanic to Fix Your Car

When it comes to auto repair services, it can be difficult knowing which
company you should trust. Be sure to fully evaluate the company with
who you seek to do business. It is usually relatively easy to learn
about various companies in your area. Ask co-workers, people in your
neighborhood, or family members who live near you for recommendations.
You will probably get a handful of suggestions from people who have had
experience with these various companies. Although some of the
suggestions are likely to be based on fact, some of the suggestions may
be a bit biased or based on a person's individual circumstance. Some
mechanics may be better working with specific types of vehicles. Other
mechanics may be better working on specific types of vehicle problems.

When deciding on an auto repair mechanic that is best for your vehicle,
think about selecting a mechanic with experience and an expertise in
repairing your vehicle type or those who are well-versed in completing
specialized problems. Select a mechanic who is near your location and
one who is honest enough to give you low-cost options for repairs.
Believing that your mechanic is honest is one of the most important
factors in your decision. Most people are willing to return to a
mechanic if they feel that the mechanic has completed the repairs
efficiently and if he or she gives customers honest prices. When you
have been involved in a car accident, or if your car breaks down, you
probably do not want to waste a lot of time searching for a mechanic. It
is more convenient to search for a mechanic when you do not really need
one. Find a mechanic to perform your car's maintenance needs, so you
will have a mechanic available during an emergency.

When selecting a mechanic for your maintenance needs, be sure to visit
different shops to comparison shop. You should not necessarily choose
the lowest price, because you may end up selecting a shop that uses
inferior products. You also may find that the customer service is below
your expectations, and you could end up being charged for additional
parts or services that were not in the original agreement. The mechanic
will constantly call you asking you to approve the additional parts and
services, until you end up paying significantly more for your auto
repair services.

Once you select a mechanic, be sure to keep up with the maintenance as
recommended by the mechanic and the user guide for your vehicle. You
will have to take your vehicles in for car repairs less frequently. It
is also more likely that you will experience the stress of being
stranded on the side of the road less often if you take your vehicle for
maintenance when you should. The mechanic can often find other parts
that should be replaced or repairs that should be made. If you need new
tires, the mechanic will likely see that they are worn, and make
suggestions for tires that will last a long period of time. If you find a
good mechanic, be sure to stay in contact with the shop, and take your
vehicle there for frequent checks to make sure that your car is safe for
your family.

With Economy Down Pay-As-You-Drive Insurance Is On The Rise

Pay-as-you-drive insurance sets your premiums based on actual miles driven and other driving habits. Drivers who participate in these programs also get discounts for avoiding violations and accidents, and for limiting time on the road during peak hours and late-night hours. The programs have been gaining popularity as weekly paychecks shrink and households struggle to make ends meet.Progressive was one of the first major insurance programs to offer telematic based discounts. They were soon followed by State Farm and Allstate. As these programs add members, all three insurance groups have been extending the programs to additional states. In order to take advantage of a telematics based insurance program, you will have to install a device in your car's diagnostic port. It will track how many miles you drive, how often you brake hard, and how smoothly you navigate turns. At this time, the privacy of drivers seems to be secure, despite these devices using wireless transmitters. Some industry analysts believe that this type of insurance may be the only option in the future.

Dodge: The Right Blend of Versatility and Style

SUVs are one of the most versatile yet efficient automobiles, and it is
little wonder that they are the most sought after car models. The
consumer market abounds with a range of four wheel drives and from the
roomy Dodge Caliber to the reliable Ram pick-up line the brand offers
plenty for even the most astute auto enthusiast.

The SUV Advantage
As a brand Dodge offers a flexible array of mid-range models from the
enticing rear-wheel experience of the Dodge Challenger to the high-end
collectibles such as the Viper. Part of the Chrysler group, one of the
most dynamic auto manufacturers, the Dodge series of four-wheel drives
cater to diverse tastes and needs. Clearly one of the early contenders
to thwart the fixation on mid-sized sedans, from the Plymouth and
DeSoto, the Chrysler’s wide array of SUVs have virtually revolutionized
the market for sturdy cars that bring powerful off-road capabilities
matched by sheer elegance.

Given the wide array of mid-priced SUVs on offer, even the most
cost-sensitive buyer is likely to be enticed into investing in a four
wheel drive. Yet, when it comes to four-wheel drives the price tag is
often the limiting factor, which makes pre-owned SUVs an absolute winner
if you are looking for performance and durability that won’t leave a
hole in your pocket.

Picking the Right Pre-Owned SUV
If affordability is of essence a pre-owned Dodge makes for the perfect
buy. Most car dealerships suggest looking for certified pre-owned
vehicles since these are inspected for quality and performance, proving
to be a virtual boon to potential buyers. Compliance with manufacturing
standards is the first step to certification and most certified dealers
include point-by-point inspection reports, comprehensive workups, and
maintenance checks designed to meet manufacturer recommendations. This
means that in addition to conforming to the standard requirements for a
resale model, certified cars also undergo a range of maintenance workups
to ensure that they are up to the predefined standard.

Certified cars are a great way for buyers to an informed choice, but the
benefits do not end there. Certified vehicles come with several
value-added incentives including warranty coverage, free road assistance
as well as car loan options if required. Aside from choosing certified
models, be sure to scrutinize vehicle history and other relevant
documents. This can be crucial to ensuring optimal fuel efficiency as
well as check mileage and general usage patterns. After all, it isn’t
everyday that one heads out Dodge shopping, so peruse resale stats and
warranty options to make the deal worth your while.

There is little doubt that pre-owned cars are a veritable approach to
maximizing your investment. However, as with most significant purchases
the key lies in prudent research. From the inspection report to the
estimate insurance coverage, a keen attention to detail pays off in
time. This can be crucial to ensuring that unwarranted outlays are
avoided down the road. Be sure to do your groundwork right, and the
payoff from your Dodge will be worth your while.

Oil Change - Get The Right Lubricant

While newer vehicles can go up to 10,00 miles without an oil change, certain circumstances can affect this frequency. Likewise, older vehicles with a lot of engine miles will also need more frequent maintenance. However, knowing the right kind of motor oil to use in the engine can also have an affect on the frequency of an oil change. Viscosity is the measurement of a motor oil's thickness, and it is one of the most important factors in its effectiveness. Keeping the engine parts lubricated is the oil's most important job because engine parts that are not properly lubricated become vulnerable to excessive heat, as well as wear and tear. While the oil will remain thick enough to properly lubricate the engine parts at certain temperatures, the lubricant will become more thin as the engine gets hotter. Therefore, cars that must operate in extremely hot environments will become more vulnerable to wear and tear because the oil may not be able to keep the parts lubricated at these high temperatures. Extremely cold temperatures can also be a problem if the lubricant freezes, and simply cannot flow to keep the parts properly coated. Luckily, there are motor oils that are specially made to withstand extremely hot or cold temperatures. Viscosity index is used to measure the oil's ability to remain thick in these extreme environments, and it is represented by the set of numbers written on a bottle of motor oil. A viscosity index between 0 and 25 indicates an engine oil that is best suited for winter or lower temperatures. Likewise, a viscosity index of around 60 indicates a lubricant that is better suited for extremely hot temperatures temperatures. Many engine lubricants come with additives to help enhance the performance and longevity of certain vehicles. For instance, high mileage motor oil includes a number of additives to help clean the engine, and prevent leakages. Older engines tend to be less efficient because of built up engine sludge and small leaks. Although these additives can be used in newer engines, they are most effective in engines with over 75,000 miles. Rust and corrosion additives help to prevent oxidation of the metal parts inside the engine. This is especially helpful in wet environments, where the moisture reacts with these parts, causing harmful corrosion and rust. Knowing how to choose the right lubricant is just as important as being diligent about getting an oil change. Although the engine is designed to last, there are certain conditions that can severely cut the life of the engine short.

Know when to go for a Windshield Repair

The windshield of a vehicle is a vital safety measurement and so even the smallest crack on it may cause lot of mess. Getting hit by rocks or dust particles the windshield may get cracks from little chips to wide spider webs. This can result in the driver's blurred vision and lead up to any severe accident. Though at some cases, windshield replacement becomes the only choice, but it is true that Auto Glass Repair is also possible for tiny cracks. There are few steps to follow for getting Windshield Repair done.Since the windshield acts as the third most important safety measure in a vehicle, it should highly taken care of and whenever a little chip or dings are found on it, it should be immediately treated to avoid any hugely expensive auto glass replacement. Before going for a Windshield Repair the first thing to be done is to assess the area of damage. The size and the depth of the chip should be minutely examined along with the location to conclude if it is eligible for an Auto Glass Repair. A crack up to 6inches in length can be invisibly repaired by resin Windshield Repair. But this is only applicable on the upper most layer of the windshield. If the crack affects two or more layers at a time or is located near the windscreen perimeter, then it will be hardly repairable. If the chip is repairable, the next thing to do is to find an experienced Auto Glass Repair technician who will inject an epoxy with the help of sunlight cured resin and special tools into the crack and it will hardly take 30 minutes. Specialized technicians are able to remove the chip completely. With direct sunlight, the resin is dried up into a strong waterproof condition which further strengthens the windshield and also obstructs the way of the chip to get spread.  Windshield Repair is undoubtedly helpful in matters of aesthetics and sturdiness. The reason why Auto Glass Repair is so convenient is because of the fact that you do not always need to take the car to an auto glass shop and rather have them over your place. The special tools for Windshield Repair being portable and the resin applied needing sunlight to dry up makes it easy for the technicians to be available on your call. It is proved that a small ding on the windshield may get affected by various factors like extreme temperature, change in temperature, rough road or speed breakers etc. Auto Glass Repair is only possible as long as the crack is not more than 6inches high. If prompt action is not taken to stop it at once, it might cost a huge amount for an entire replacement. So one should take care of the situation before it is too late for a Windshield Repair and the only thing left to do is to make a heavy payment for replacing the auto glass.

Audi Repair – Choose Wisely

In towns all across North America, you will find auto mechanics that do a
superb job of servicing vehicles. Many of these mechanics have years of
training and experience and are trusted by their clients to provide
top-notch service. However, few of these mechanics are trained in Audi
repair. When it comes to choosing a mechanic for your luxury brand
vehicle, you must choose wisely.

One of the main differences between luxury cars and standard cars is the
technology that is built into the vehicle. It seems that these days the
cars are as technological as they are mechanical. When it comes to Audi
repair, you need to choose a technician who understands this technology
and can work with it. Obviously, you could visit a dealership and have
any and all repairs handled there. However, this is not always a viable
option since dealers tend to be the highest priced repair shops
available, and there may not be a local one when you need it. If you are
not having your car serviced by a dealer, your technician or mechanic
will need access to VCDS, or the VAG-COM Diagnostic System. VAG-COM is
Microsoft Windows based software that is used in place of the diagnostic
tools available only to dealers. This software enables the mechanic to
diagnose problems and program control modules as needed.

Audi repair is also different because there are fewer of these types of
cars than domestic vehicles. While a mechanic might be particularly
gifted at repairing domestic vehicles, he may struggle to do similar
work on a luxury car because of the unique ways that Audis and other
luxury vehicles are built. If you find yourself in need of a technician,
you will want to look for a few specific qualifications. First, you ask
if the mechanic is fully licensed and insured. Also, make sure that he
(or she) uses OEM parts and fluids for all repairs. Additionally, ask if
the repairs will be made to the manufacturer’s specifications. Finally,
check to see if the technician is trained specifically in Audi repair
or has adequate experience working with your type of vehicle.

Obviously, since you chose a luxurious vehicle, you will want to care
for it in the best way possible. By doing a little homework and making a
careful selection, you can find a technician that will meet the needs
of your car and your wallet. Audi repair does not have to be a headache
to be successful, and a little legwork with save you a lot of stress in
the long run.

What are the latest car deals offered by car dealers

Young people looking for their first car or first new car will always experience a little "sticker shock" when they realize how genuinely expensive cars are. People who are used to used cars, which may cost a tiny fraction of what they did when they were new, will be amazed at how expensive new cars are, with even lower-end models costing tens of thousands of Australian dollars. Fortunately, those who are determined to get a great deal on a new car can take advantage of the unique situation within the Australian economy to save a bundle, and to get a vehicle which will keep them happy and mobile for many years to come. The global economic crisis has placed heavy strain on auto makers, as shown by the collapse of America's brands and the general downward spiral of many smaller European brands. Additionally, the earthquake in Japan and subsequent nuclear disaster has put an intense pressure on Japanese auto makers, reducing their ability to make cars and greatly cutting into their profits. This means that car manufacturers are desperate to move vehicles into the hands of new owners, since doing so is essential for their long-term success, as well as necessary to convince their lenders that they will be able to pay off their debts. As such, many dealers are now offering special car deals, especially when it comes to lending, that they would not have otherwise offered. While the days of easy credit and no money down are long gone, most auto dealers are desperate to move cars off the lot and will extend loans and credit to persons with minimal assets and modest credit ratings. Many banks are also more willing to extend auto loans than they might have been in the past, since putting up loans for houses is more risky as they will likely be unable to sell the house in the event of a default. As such, many of the car buyers on today's market will find that it is easier to get an auto loan now than it was a year or two ago.Additionally, the pressure to remove cars from inventory gives customers a lot more bargaining power. Smart buyers who do their research and determine what a car is really worth, usually through comparison shopping and online sales records, can aggressively negotiate downward. The days of cars being handed out fast and furious with lots of extra options are gone, and aggressive hagglers can get down well past the sticker price. It is a great idea to bring along copies of sales sheets, cost sheets and advertisements from competitors when negotiating the final price of a car in order to facilitate this.Lastly, the global economy has placed increased pressure on low-market cars, driving up the value of used vehicles. More and more people want to buy used vehicles in order to save money, and this has led to a consequent increase in trade-in value. Many  car dealers who thus sell both new and used vehicles will be willing to offer significantly greater value for a used car than they would have even two or three years ago, and are also willing to accept cars which are more worn or less popular than they would have historically. This can be a great negotiating point for new car buyers, since the relative value of a used vehicle is difficult to determine and somewhat intangible. Therefore, a good negotiator who knows that his used car is more valuable than it used to be can get much more value for their trade-in, and can thus decrease the out of pocket price for the new car.

Free GM Insurance Offered in 2012

GM insurance was offered for free in 2011 in Washington and Oregon as a possible way to help boost the sales of new cars for GM.  This was a whole year of insurance for free, and it seemed to work.  This worked so well, in fact, that they are thinking that they may extend the offer into the 2012 year.GM partnered with Metlife for the pilot of this program.  This week was the last week of the pilot, and a spokesman for Metlife stated that before making any plans for the future, they are going to have the professionals go over the information to see if there was any direct effect on the sales for the 2011 year in these areas.During the pilot, the policies that were offered exceeded the state requirements.  Not only were physical and liability covered, but so was vehicle replacement for those vehicles that were damaged to the point of being beyond repairing.  This also did not take into account the depreciation of the vehicle.  Another perk to this was that there was no changes to the policies based on the gender, age, or previous drivers record for those purchasing the vehicles. While many other insurance companies were outraged by this, both of the states approved it.  The general hope is that GM was able to increase sales enough for the program to be extended and expanded to new areas.  The idea of free GM insurance for a whole year is great!

Oil Change - Pros and Cons of 3000

When you drive up to a scheduled maintenance and oil change, you are
getting more than just a filter and some 5W30. While keeping your engine
well lubricated is pertinent to keeping your car on the road, it is
often the extras that come with the cost of the oil change that
professionals argue to be important to driver safety. Simple things like
broken windshield wipers, failed brake lights blinkers or headlights,
or low fluids cause too many roadway accidents, and studies show that
motorists are more likely to keep up on engine oil checks and changes
than they are on regular checks on other things. Perhaps because running
on poor or no lubricant ruins an engine, drivers seem more worried
about this maintenance, and with the nationwide decrease in states that
no longer require yearly vehicle inspections, it is very important to
find another way to remember to check the other working parts of your
car. Perhaps adhering to a regular maintenance schedule is the answer.
The downside of frequent checks is certainly the cost. With the average
driver logging 12,000 or more miles a year, sticking to the 3000 mile
rule can cost more than one-hundred dollars annually. For some, this may
not be much, but to those struggling with the current economy, with
unemployment, or with other financial blows that come with raising
families, that cash may be hard to come by.

The ideal situation would be to of course have regular engine oil
maintenance, but if you choose not to inquire every 3000 miles, make a
schedule that you can stick to. Most late model cars suggest mileages
can accrue 75,000 or more before a change is needed, and this if fine,
if your maintenance professional agrees with your car’s performance
ability. But if you are going to cut corners, you will need to remember
to check out other potential malfunctions more often. Make a pact with
yourself that you will fix an askew wiper blade upon noticing it.
Perhaps affiliate checking blinkers, lights, and fluids with the change
of the seasons or with the spring forward and fallback of the clock.

Oil change is important for the upkeep of your vehicle and should not be
avoided in an attempt to cut costs, but it is true that most vehicles
can go beyond the legend of 3000 miles without this type of engine
maintenance. As your car ages, you get a different car, or your driving
conditions change, you should reconsider your maintenance schedule.

What if I told you that there is a way for you to avoid long lines and busy crowds at the auto shop; would you believe me? While most people don’t know the best times to go to the best shop, some do and end up beating the crowds as well as potentially getting better service. It is the intention of this article to discuss the best times to go to the auto mechanic in an effort to benefit customers. The first and perhaps most obvious best time to go to the auto mechanic is early in the morning. Specifically, when the auto shop opens (i.e. 9:00am) is a great time. If you have ever heard of the phrase, the early bird gets the worm you know that being first in line is one of the fastest ways to get the skip to the front of the line, no matter what service you are seeking. However, this is especially true for visits to the auto shop. Another best time to go to the auto mechanic is the middle of the week. Have you ever noticed the long lines at the auto shop on Mondays and Fridays? This is primarily due to the fact that most people are preoccupied during the daytime and do not have the availability to go to the auto shop during the middle of the week. This is particularly true not only for those who work outside the home during the daytime, but are also preparing for and coming back from weekend travel. However, if you are able to make an adjustment in your schedule so that you can go to the auto shop in the middle of the week, you can and will be able to avoid long lines and overwhelmed repairmen. The third best time to go to the auto mechanic is an hour before closing time. Although this may seem like a particularly peculiar idea, it indeed makes a lot of sense when you consider two factors: no one else will probably show up to have their car serviced just before closing and if you are willing to leave your car overnight, your car can be serviced first thing in the morning, even before the first customer arrives. Whether you realize it or not, there are better times to go to the mechanic. This is especially true with respect to avoiding long waiting lines, crowds and even perhaps overwhelmed repairmen. However, if you want to avoid long lines, crowds and overwhelmed repairmen, you can go to the auto shop early in the morning, the middle of the week and an hour before closing time.

Should Your First Car Be a Used BMW?

You have saved and saved your money, and you are now embarking upon a
rite of passage—buying your first car. There are so many things you
should consider with safety being first among others such as price,
re-sale value, repair needs, and availability of parts for those
repairs, but the only thing on your mind is the car. That is why a used
BMW is a great choice for the first time buyer.

These luxury cars are purchased new generally by the elite few that can
afford them. Their resale value is at best about five years after
driving off a new lot, and that is to your advantage. Those who drive
new cars replace them every four to five years on average, and a five
year old used BMW is a great first car. It could still be under a
dealer’s warranty, though an extended warranty would be easy to obtain
due to the car’s reliability. A luxury car such as this was surely cared
for meticulously by its first owner which means a comparably new
vehicle is being passed down to you.

BMWs continue to have excellent resale value even after multiple owners.
You can snag a great deal on a newish vehicle that will have little
depreciation in comparison to its counterparts. Essentially, your first
vehicle is the foundation for all vehicles you will ever own. You will
trade it in on your next car, and if it does not hold its value, you
could continue to pay for it as a part of your next car loan. This used
car will draw top dollar for trade in or to sell for a down payment when
the time comes for you to move into your newer better car—perhaps
another luxury BMW.

You may hear a lot of hype about needing a mechanic specializing in
luxury foreign cars or even on this type of vehicle specifically. For
some reason, people want to tout this as a con to purchasing this type
of vehicle, but there is not real downside to using special mechanic.

For one, you will not spend a lot of time searching for someone if your
vehicle needs maintenance or repair; you know where you are going, and
it is likely that such a specialized business will know its customers
well. Your used BMW has such a good record of infrequent repairs outside
of regular maintenance, that even if prices on parts are higher (which
is not always true), it really carries no weight on your investment in
the vehicle. But let’s get back to you and your concerns. You will
certainly look good behind the wheel.

Oil Change - Signs of Maturity

Getting an oil change is an aspect to the growing up process. When a
child receives his or her first car, it is important for that young
person to learn all of the required maintenance needs for the vehicle.
Most people think that driving or buying a first car are hallmarks to
becoming an adult, but being a responsible person and making sure that
your vehicle is cared for shows that you are a responsible vehicle
owner.

Learning to drive defensively and being able to handle hazards on the
road is also important. A good vehicle owner is alert and thinks about
possible hazards at all times. He or she is ready to respond if there is
a potential accident. For example, when another driver backs out and
does not appear to be paying attention to others, a responsible driver
stops and waits for that person. If a driver illegally changes lanes or
cuts another person off on the road, a responsible driver handles the
situation with style and grace, safely staying out the person's way and
managing his or her anger. Yelling and screaming at another driver can
impair a safe driver's ability to drive. Keeping your temper in check
and reacting in a calm thoughtful manner is a sign of maturity.

A person who abides by the laws and is a conscientious driver is less
likely to have parking tickets or moving violations. If you do receive
an occasional parking ticket or a moving violation, a responsible driver
pays for the ticket as soon as possible or deals with the ticket in
court. Ignoring tickets can result in a suspended license or other
penalties. Dealing with the issues as soon as possible shows that you
are able to handle challenges or deal with problems. A person who is
immature, ignores tickets until they find that their vehicle is booted
or they are unable to drive their vehicle due to a suspended license.

Scheduling vehicle maintenance is also an indicator of maturity. A
mature person and a responsible vehicle owner completes vehicle
maintenance to make sure that the vehicle is safe for the road.
Passengers are also counting on the vehicle's owner to make sure that
the vehicle is safe. When people get into your car, they expect that you
tires are properly inflated. They take it for granted that you get an
oil change when it is time to do so. They are certain that you make sure
the fluid levels are appropriate and your battery is in good condition.

No adult will willingly drive with a vehicle owner who does not keep his
or her vehicle properly maintained. You should not consider driving
your car if you do not have it inspected or maintained. Ignoring your
vehicle's maintenance, such as the need for an oil change, or completing
only minimum maintenance, can result in an unexpected breakdown. This
can be especially serious for young drivers who breakdown in an unsafe
area or people who a driving with babies or children as passengers.
Although learning to drive, getting a license, and buying a first car
are signs of maturity, keeping a car maintained and staying safe on the
road are the ultimate tests.

Is Your Car the Only Vehicle on Which You Perform an oil Change?

It is important for the life of the engine on your vehicle that you get an occasional oil change. Most manufacturers recommend that you get it changed between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. There are some new technologies available, however, that allow you to go longer without changing your oil. As long as the oil is staying clean, it is okay to go the longer distance, but if it is dirty when you check it, then you may want to consider changing your oil a little sooner. Many times your mechanic will place a sticker on your windshield with the mileage for the recommended oil change. Motor oil is a lubricant for an internal combustion engine. It is usually used to keep the moving parts moist so as to reduce the wear and tear on your engine. Not only does it keep the parts moist, but also motor oil helps clean, cool, and seal these parts. There are two main types of motor oil, natural petroleum oil and synthetic chemical based oil. Most are now blended with hydrocarbons and other organic materials. When metal parts are given a nice coat of oil, it keeps them from being exposed to oxygen so that there is less chance of oxidation, especially at high temperatures when rust and corrosion are most likely to occur. Some oils may also have added chemicals to help prevent corrosion, and detergents to help clean the engine and reduce the sludge build up. Oil attracts silt and sometimes does singe as the engine temperature increases, which causes it to look dirty and dark. Sometimes the rubbing of parts against one another can cause particles to get into the oil. The oil filter helps clean any of these potentially harmful parts out of the oil. It is important to have this filter changed each time that you have your regularly scheduled oil change. The engine also contains an oil pump to help get the engine parts lubricated faster. Cars are not the only vehicles that need occasional oil changes, but any vehicle that has an internal combustion engine should have its oil changed occasionally.. These vehicles include your gas-powered lawn mower or snow blower so that it always performs at its best. If you own a seasonal recreation vehicle, such as a snow mobile, boat, or jet-ski, you should also get the oil changed in it to prevent the extra wear and tear on the engine. It is also important to have an oil change performed on your motorcycle or any other motored vehicle so that all its moving parts are always in their best working order. Any time that you operate a vehicle with moving parts, oil will be needed to help keep all the moving parts lubricated and in good working order. It will also need an occasional oil change so that all these moving parts stay clean and in the best of shape.

Auto Shop: Is Your Transmission Running?

One of the worst and most expensive things that could happen to your
vehicle is that its transmission will quit working unexpectedly. Finding
a good auto shop is one of the most important parts of getting your
transmission fixed, but before you do that, there are some basic checks
that you can do to make sure that the transmission is the problem before
you just take your vehicle into the shop.

Before you do the checks, you need to make sure that you are familiar
with the transmission parts so that you know exactly what you are
diagnosing. These are the:

• Bell Housing, which is usually beside the engine on a front wheel
drive vehicle and behind the engine on a rear wheel drive. It is the
bell shaped part that you can see when you look under the car.

• Gears, which are found in automatic transmissions as well as manual
transmissions. You need all of them for it to drive properly.

• Fluid, which is red in most transmissions, so if you see a red puddle
under the vehicle, you know it is the transmission fluid.

• Filter, which helps keep the fluid clean so that the gears work properly. It may need to be cleaned or changed occasionally.

Now that you are familiar with the parts and how they work, it is
possible to begin the diagnosing process before the vehicle is taken to
the auto shop.

Since you now know what to look for, you need to first check the fluid
levels. This should be done about twice a year anyway. Low fluids could
cause the poor shifting in the gears and if left too long could cause
damage to your transmission. A good indication of fluid leakage is that
it is low every time you check it. To check for leaks, check the base
for the filter tube, the transmission drain hole, between the engine and
transmission, the gear shifting rod, and the radiator. Not only could
it be a leak, but also it is possible that you may have a clogged
filter. Because you need the filter for the vehicle to perform at its
best, try changing that before you take the vehicle to the auto shop.

If you have checked the fluids and replaced the filter and you are still
having transmission problems, then maybe it is time to have it rebuilt.
This is not something that most people can do, so you will need to
visit your auto shop where you can explain to your mechanic what the
vehicle is doing and what you found when you inspected it. This will
help him know exactly where to look when he takes it apart, which will
be quite expensive. However, when you pay for a rebuilt transmission
your auto shop usually includes a warranty so that you should not have
to pay for one for a long time.

Is Synthetic Oil Change A Good Idea?

Every motorist most likely knows how important an oil change is for the
wellbeing of his or her car. Most individuals have been taught from an
early age that if you regularly perform this one automotive task, your
vehicle will last years longer. Oil is like the lifeblood of a vehicle.
If it’s clean and filled up to the proper amount, the machinery will run
like a charm. If it runs low or gets dirty, this can create havoc
within the mechanical systems. Imagine not having enough blood in your
body or having it clogged up with crud. This actually does happen when
humans eat too many foods that contain saturated fats; it clogs the
works and a heart attack occurs. The equivalent in a car is a blown
engine, thrown rod or an early burial in the junkyard. There are now
synthetic and non-synthetic lubricants on the market and many drivers
are wondering which is preferable for their car. Here are some things to
think about:

- Synthetics are replacing non-synthetics: If you go to your local auto
supply store, you’ll notice more synthetic products being sold. If a
customer inquires about the pros and cons of each, he or she may get
conflicting answers:

- Artificial lubricant: These products are similar to petroleum but
contain manmade artificial components. These have different qualities
from crude oil’s raw natural ones, and it might affect your oil change.

- Early products ineffective: The early artificial lubricants had
swelling qualities that were different from natural products. These
early types caused leaking because seals shrank and a proper fit
disappeared due to the shrinkage. This difficulty has been resolved and
shouldn’t occur with today’s products.

- Mixing types: There are differing opinions on whether it’s acceptable
to go back and forth between artificial and natural products. This would
be a discussion a motorist may want to have with his or her mechanic.

- Semi-synthetic: There are lubricants on the market today that are a
blend of natural and artificial. These are known as semi-synthetics and
usually have a ratio of 70% mineral to 30% manmade.

- Pros: The artificial products are reported to evaporate less, promote
longer engine life, work better in extreme temperatures, improve fuel
efficiency, and be more environmentally friendly because they don’t have
to be changed as often.

- Cons: They are not recommended for rotary engines, they may break down
certain types of plastic components, and some erratic decomposition has
been noted in certain situations.

Whether a person should use synthetic or non-synthetic lubricants in his
or her vehicle is still debated. Sometimes this will depend on the
brand and model of the car, the climate it’s driven in, how old it is
and what the history of oil change products has been. A wise consumer
will research all of the options and discuss it with his or her most
trustworthy mechanic. One fact that no one quibbles over is whether this
car maintenance task is necessary. Lubricants are the lifeblood of a
vehicle. Keeping them clean and filled up will ensure more road time for
the vehicle.
